What made you decide to giveaway dolls?
I was tagged in an Instagram post last year by a dear friend. The post was from an orphanage in Africa asking if anyone had dolls they would be willing to send their way. She went on to say that the dolls the children had were made from old mosquito nets that were no longer usable. Of course I wanted to send dolls to this woman. Of course I wanted to fill the hands of these children with bright colored toys that they could see themselves in. I almost immediately responded with “YES, yes of course I will send you all the dolls you need.” But then I froze. Would I really be able to make all these dolls? Would this woman even want them? I finally sent a message offering to send dolls and the rest is history. I was in tears, literally, when she sent me the first video of the children playing with their dolls. How could I stop here?
Why are you giving away dolls?
Think back to when you were a child. Did you have a stuffed animal or toy that you carried with you anywhere you went? Think about one that was only yours, one that you didn’t have to share or give back. Did it make you feel safe, comfortable, and loved? That is our mission. We want to bring that feeling of comfort and love to all children, especially children living in temporary homes. Did you know that UNICEF estimates that 140 million children worldwide are orphans? Moving from home to home or living in an orphanage with a lot of other children can make for a LOT of sharing and losing things. We know toys aren’t going to feed and clothe all the children and give them warm beds. What they can do is symbolize love. We can’t bring all of those children home, but just maybe we can bring each of them a small token of love until they are brought home.
How does it work?
For every toy purchased from our shop we will donate one to the orphanage or foster home we are working with that quarter. Some of these children live in Africa, some of them live in Taiwan, and some live here in the United States. We work with places all over the world. Your one purchase will have the ability to bring a smile to a child’s face halfway around the world. Every time you see your own little ones face light up from playing with an Aleks Handmade toy you will be reminded that somewhere, halfway across the world, another child is also smiling because of you.
We may not be moving mountains or pushing through ceilings over here but we are creating smiles, and really that is all we ever wanted to do. Keep sharing smiles, they are contagious.
Where are the dolls going?
We have two orphanages we are working with right now. Ekubo Ministries in Ekubo, Uganda and Hogar Miguel Leon in Cuenca, Ecuador. Both homes are hoping for dolls by the end of Spring. Our current goal is to send a total of 60 dolls. We can’t do this without your help.
We are always looking for new places to partner with. If you would love to see our dolls somewhere let us know!
